How Online Classes Work
The Pacific Oaks online program uses the “Izio” platform from Learning Technology Partners. The program is web-based, meaning you must be connected to the Internet in order to read and respond. You may connect at any time of the day or night that is convenient for you, usually 4-5 times per week. The program stores messages in a way that allows all Pacific Oaks onliners to communicate and interact with each other asynchronously (from different locations and at different times).

Technical Requirements
Computer: You may use any computer with access to the Internet for online classes. Because the course is stored on a website, you can use different computers in different locations as convenient.
Internet Account: You will need an e-mail account for administrative communication and Internet access for participating in class. To avoid any surprise bills, make sure you have unlimited access with your Internet Service Provider and your modem connects to a local number or one that is toll-free if possible.
Software: You will need Microsoft Word (not Microsoft Works) installed on your computer. The Izio platform may be accessed with most commonly used WebBrowsers by both Macs and PC's.

Newcomers’ Orientation
HD491/691: Pacific Oaks Online Orientation is a prerequisite for all new online students. It will acquaint you with the Pacific Oaks Online community while learning to navigate Izio, our cybercampus, for your online classes.
Orientation consists of a 7 handout tutorial to read and 12 assignments to complete as you interact with other PO students and faculty. Orientation faculty are readily available for help and moral support. We will assign you to a small group for specific Orientation assignments, discussion practice and mutual support; and the rest of the PO Online Community in Pacific Oaks Café can be counted on to be friendly and helpful as well (you’ll meet them about halfway through Orientation). The entire orientation process takes 10 online sessions, 5 per week for 2 weeks.
Please note: You will not be allowed to join your online class unless you fully participate in and complete your scheduled orientation. Orientation assignments are monitored by orientation staff and are separate from (and in addition to) any pre-class coursework assigned by the instructors of your upcoming online courses. Be sure to note the starting dates for your courses and schedule your orientation so you will be finished well before your first class begins. Early sessions are highly recommended since Orientation gives students access to additional class information and resources prior to class.
