Advising
The MFT Department prides itself on building a relationship with students enrolled in the program. To that end, faculty serves not only as instructors, but also as mentors, and advisors. Advising students is supportive in nature, inspiring, and informational to serve the students’ academic/professional needs.
MFT advisors approach advising as a partnership with students. Advisors are expected to reach out to students, stay current on all the latest program changes in the department as well as in the mental health field, and maintain communication with the student on a regular basis.
Students are expected to stay in communication with their advisors, to be proactive and seek support and guidance. Advising time spent together should focus on the students’ progress, the advising and planning for course selections, the overall development frame of the course curriculum, and how the student can benefit from planning their course scheduling and clinical training. The student’s capacity for: insight, feedback, openness, self reflection, professional behavior and time management are addressed and developed in the advising relationship as well as in the classroom.
Personal setbacks are a normal occurrence in a students’ busy life, an active advising relationship, between student and advisor, can bridge the personal challenges with the student’s academic career. Communication and relationship building is key to a dynamic advising experience.
