 A. The credential requirements can be completed in two different formats:  Intensive and Part time.  Please see the attached sheet for additional information and requirements to be admitted to the program.  You can expect to complete the credential in four to eight semesters, depending on the strand you select or qualify for and the completion of non-course requirements, such as exams.

Q: I want to be an Intern.  How do I join the Intern Program?

 A. To be in the Intern Program, you must have your B.A., a full-time teaching job in a public elementary school, and CBEST and CSET passed.  Not all students will be eligible for the Intern Program, as the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) has specific requirements for Intern Credential students.  An admissions counselor can explain the Intern Program to you. Interns have a shorter program, since their teaching counts as their fieldwork.

 Q: Can I combine the Credential with a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree?

 A. Yes.  The course work for the MSEL credential also meets the requirements for the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Human Development.  If you are seeking a Master’s degree, you will be required to complete at least six (6) additional course units and write a thesis.  If you don’t have a completed Bachelor’s degree, then you must apply for the BA and the MSEL credential program simultaneously.

Q: What is subject matter competency?

 A. Subject matter competency means that you have the knowledge to teach the multiple subjects (Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and the Arts) in a self-contained K-12 classroom.  The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing now requires all candidates new to the profession to pass the CSET examination (California Subject Examination for Teachers) to demonstrate subject matter competency.  The CSET must be passed before you can do your Directed Teaching. For more information on the CSET, please visit the website at www.cset.nesinc.com or call (916) 928-4003. The RICA (Reading Instruction Competence Assessment) must be passed before you can be recommended for your credential. For more information on the RICA, please check out www.rica.nesinc.com

Q: When do I begin the student teaching?

 A. The Directed Teaching (student teaching) portion of the credential program at Pacific Oaks begins after you have passed all sections of the CSET.  Directed teaching is a semester long course, where you would initially observe and assist a teacher in a public school classroom, then assume teaching responsibility for this same classroom for at least a two-week period.  Student teaching is a full day, 5 days a week for one semester (15 weeks).
