Special Topics: Supporting Reflection in the Work Environment

Reflective Practice is essential to competence in human services. We will explore ways to encourage a reflective workplace: Identifying environmental features, roles, activities; examining the roadblocks to reflecting. We will look at reflecting with a group and as individuals, using various media and approaches to reflection.

In this class we will look at our own lives as teachers and students and search for the experiences which have reached to our authentic selves, to our "heart place" and helped us to become more truly ourselves, even when we didn't know who we were seeking to become. Based upon our own shared experiences and selected readings from writers like bell hooks, Freire, Myles Horton, Joanna Macy, Parker Palmer, Richard Rodriguez, we will construct our own philosophies of education for what really matters.

Special Topics: Sense and Perception and Learning

This class will explore how children learn, process and communicate using their kinesthetic, auditory and visual perception. It will challenge the theory that we develop a primary perceptual mode for learning, and examine how both children and adults use all three pereceptual modes to fully integrate their learning.
