M.A. Advocacy & Social Justice Degree Program Online

The M.A. Advocacy & Social Justice degree online program offers students an in-depth exploration of the impact social justice reform has across a range of global cultures and institutions. It also provides a range of techniques for mobilizing communities in the pursuit of reform in the areas of civil liberties & individual rights, health care, environmental policy, immigration, labor, veteran’s rights, poverty, and more. The Advocacy & Social Justice Master’s program culminates in a hands-on project where students put theory into practice. Students not only observe, investigate and critically evaluate policies, practices, and emergent issues in their fieldwork, they create opportunities to implement change.

Legal Studies

The M.A. Advocacy & Social Justice: Legal Studies Concentration provides students the ability to engage in advocacy and equity work with a strong legal studies lens. The Master’s in Advocacy & Social Justice program enhances students understanding at the intersection of legal and judicial systems and individuals, families, and communities from a legal perspective.

Culture and Communities

The M.A. Advocacy & Social Justice: Culture and Communities concentration provides students with the ability to explain the intricacies of cultural impacts on societal systems. It provides students with a variety of techniques to engage communities and delivers an in-depth exploration of race and identity, social inequity, and other global issues.


The M.A. Advocacy & Social Justice: Education Concentration is designed for in-depth exploration of educational policy and its impact on academic, community and family systems. Students explore social, political, and economic foundations of education, leadership in education, and techniques for implementing anti-bias curriculum in the education system.

Harnessing the Power of Technology and Social Media for Social Impact and Change

This course provides a comprehensive examination of various methods and techniques employed by media, modern technology, and social media engagement to impact social change movements. Students evaluate communication tools used to generate multi-media protocol for social impact and change. Students will analyze the characteristics and use of varied media modalities including, but not limited to social media, streaming media, music, and television to assess their collective impact on maintaining an existing system or organizing, mobilizing, and affecting change in a new system.

Democracy and Social Movements

This class looks at social change through the lens of contemporary social issues as well as broader decision making processes that occur in democratic societies. Students will critically evaluate social movements concerning the environment, public health, organized labor and housing, among participatory decision making. Students will apply insights from this class by designing a project for change at an organization, school, community or government agency that includes a critical evaluation of strengths and weaknesses as well as a plan for assessing outcomes.
