In a world full of injustice, it is easy to feel overwhelmed, helpless, and frustrated. One person can only do so much. But as an organized community, we accomplish extraordinary feats.
So, in the spirit of Pacific Oaks’ legacy of devotion to social justice, we launched a new Advocacy & Social Justice program (ASJ) to provide a clear path for dreamers to become doers; for individuals seeking to influence positive change through strategic action and take a stand for critical social issues—from health care, to educational equity, to grappling with climate change.
“Having additional credentials helps to fight against institutionalized -isms—whether that’s institutionalized sexism or racism—meaning that if I come along with talents and skills and a doctoral degree, it makes it more challenging to deny me entry,” said Donald Grant, Associate Dean of the School of Human Development. “We need people to continue to gain access to shift conversations.”
The Advocacy & Social Justice program offers both a bachelor’s and master’s degree pathway, examining historical social justice theory and movements while aiming to equip graduates with a broad range of techniques for mobilizing and empowering communities and organizations to affect positive change in our world. Students emerge prepared to confront complex challenges of a modern, interconnected society on a local, national, and global level.
Bachelor’s students have the option of pursuing concentrations in Culture and Communities, and Education. Master’s students have the option of a third concentration in Legal Studies. Each of these concentrations offers in-depth insight into the influence of societal systems on injustice and inequity within populations.
An Advocacy & Social Justice degree also provides graduates the opportunity to pursue a range of meaningful careers, including:
