In November 2017, Pacific Oaks launched its new “Lunch and Learn” webinar series to support the ongoing educational growth of the entire PO Community―students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

The premiere webinar examined how to foster an understanding of the psychological effects and lived experiences of people of color. Moderated by Jamille Harrell-Sims, Ph.D., PO adjunct professor and the CEO at Harrell Kagler Interventions, Inc., the webinar examined the nature of racism, how racism is institutionalized, and how being exposed to overt and covert racism creates generational trauma.

The 45-minute talk included specific examples about how factors such as the educational and financial system, gentrification, health care, food access, housing, and marketing can be both opportunities and hindrances for some, specifically those affected by institutionalized racism. In addition, the “Lunch and Learn” webinar explored how hate and bigotry create trauma for those who practice it.
