Dear Pacific Oaks College and Children’s School Community,

I write today to directly address the deeply troubling Executive Order Donald Trump signed on Friday, January 27, 2017, restricting people from seven countries and refugees from entering the United States.

Anxieties are high as we wait with the rest of the world to understand the impact of this Order.  In light of this uncertainty, my first concern is you, our Pacific Oaks community of students, faculty, teachers, staff, and alumni.

We are vigilantly following updates as they evolve to ensure that we are offering the best support for our international students and scholars.  Our CARE Office, in partnership with our Office of Global Engagement, will continue to offer support.  Both departments are working closely with me as we partner with the broader academic community to monitor and respond to the situation.  We will continue to analyze the impact of the Executive Order and will issue additional guidance and campus-based supports.  If you have specific questions, please do not hesitate to contact Pat Meda, Director of the CARE Office at [email protected], or Jennifer Fullick, Director of Global Engagement at [email protected].

Ever since our inception as an institution, Pacific Oaks has remained dedicated to the fundamental values of inclusion, social justice, and respect for the unique potential of every human being.  Pacific Oaks continues to embody these core values, and this most recent Executive Order is diametrically opposed to what we hold most precious.  We strive to ensure and to teach the principles of equal opportunity and fairness for all.  We embrace the diversity of our multicultural and religious communities and will continue to foster a welcoming environment for our international student body. We are part of a local and global community that is richer and stronger for our inclusiveness.  This is where you belong.

I will be in touch as we navigate this situation in a way that puts our students first.

Warm regards,
Pat Breen
