Service is key to Pacific Oaks’ core values and a vital part of preparing graduates to meet the needs of their communities. By participating in service projects, Pacific Oaks students, faculty, staff, and alumni solidify a commitment to improving the lives of those around them. Community service projects also give the college knowledge of the broader community that it can use to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need.
In 2022, leadership set a goal for the Pacific Oaks community to contribute 2,022 hours of service work within the calendar year. By the end of the year, not only did students, faculty, and staff rise to the challenge, they exceeded the goal, logging 2,285 hours and assisting 37 nonprofit organizations. Jane Sawyer, SPHR, vice president of human resources and organizational effectiveness at Pacific Oaks, details her experience. “I worked with five nonprofits that supported Latino communities, neurodiverse communities, art and culture, environmental advocacy, animal welfare, and economic development,” she says. “I provided human resources support, from consultations to reviewing and updating employee handbooks.”
Sawyer also emphasizes the importance of service work at Pacific Oaks. “We want our students to graduate feeling prepared to achieve the progress they hope for in their communities,” she says. “Our graduates have been able to accomplish amazing things [for their communities], and we hope to continue that legacy for the future.”
