For Jerell B. Hill, Pacific Oaks faculty in the School of Education, visiting Peru was an eye-opening experience because of the countless lessons he learned regarding diversity, culture, and the economy.
“When I hear the stories of challenges overseas and actually seeing them in the flesh, it gives me an even higher level of empathy,” says Hill, who traveled to Peru for the “Culture and Diversity: the Power of Purpose” conference from February 13-15. “I can see the resiliency they have, and it gave me a deeper appreciation of what people in Peru have to do on a day-to-day basis. In the United States, we at least have Social Services. In Peru, you have to save yourself.”
This was one of many takeaways that Hill got from his trip. After returning to Pacific Oaks, Hill completed a follow-up presentation about the 2018 International Congress for Educators in Peru.
In the following video, filmed on February 28, Hill discusses his trip to Machu Picchu, strategies for diverse student populations, his dissertation research with the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), teaching and leadership in Finland, and more.
