The Importance of Diversity with Dr. Pedro Noguera

In this virtual presentation and discussion, Pedro Noguera, Ph.D., joins Pacific Oaks College School of Education Dean Jerell B. Hill, Ed.D., in a philosophical and practical conversation about transforming systems to increase diversity among classroom professionals.

Dr. Noguera outlines the “Educator Pipeline” that indicates different steps on the journey from student to teacher, as well as pointing out how students of color are frequently lost at every stage of the pipeline. His work also reveals places where the pipeline can be improved and the importance of cultural competency and intersectionality in making changes. According to Dr. Noguera, teachers need to learn how to form strong relationships with their students to engage them. However, teachers today are very isolated, lacking connections and support to meet the needs of all students and remain in the profession.

Additionally, Dr. Noguera and Dr. Hill discuss the most important core competencies for teachers to support students with diverse backgrounds, the key factors needed in transformation work at the local and state levels, and how diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts can be better measured.

Pacific Oaks College and the Pasadena Unified School District are proud partners in the third cohort of the Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity’s (BranchED) National Teacher Preparation Transformation Center.
