Todd Hioki—master teacher at the Pacific Oaks Children’s School, adjunct faculty member at Pacific Oaks College, and Human Development alum—has been honored with the 2019 UCLA Extension Distinguished Instructor Award.
UCLA Extension is a professional studies provider, where Hioki has taught multiple sections of “Introduction to Teaching Young Children” and “Developing an Infant and Toddler Child Care Centers.” The award was only given to eight instructors out of a pool of more than 2,000.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award. I think my secret for success teaching adults was to apply what I learned at Pacific Oaks,” Hioki says. “Elizabeth Jones, Ph.D., Susan Bernheimer, Ph.D., and Cheryl Greer-Jarman taught me that whether you’re teaching preschoolers or graduate students, making a personal connection with each student comes before all else.”
Hioki received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College. He is a well-rounded educator: not only does he teach early childhood education courses at Pacific Oaks College, he also works at Pacific Oaks Children’s School as a master teacher, working with children aged 6 months to 5 years. There, he designs and implements progressive play-based curriculums, incorporating the principles of emergent, experiential, and anti-bias programs.
We congratulate Todd on all his accomplishments, and are honored to have him as an integral part of the PO community!
