In a recent opinion piece published by “Diverse: Issues in Higher Education,” Jerell Hill, Ed.D., dean of the School of Education at the Pasadena and online campuses, speaks to the urgency for justice in U.S. society and how educators and communities across the country might play a role in achieving it for future generations.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought many changes to educational approaches in the U.S., in addition to highlighting and centering various looming inequities built into our societal systems. Through better training for educators in diversity issues via Culturally Relevant Teaching, leading with empathy, and conducting work through a critical humility lens, Dr. Hill hopes that communities can begin to take on the tough questions together, with support and understanding for families, and move toward real progress.
Dr. Hill feels deeply compelled to record and publish his ideas, inspired to use his position to bring more attention to equity issues in education. “I find power and freedom in writing, in being able to raise my voice. I also acknowledge my privilege,” he says. “But since I have the privilege to have a place of leadership in higher education, I want to use it to help shine a light on students and communities everywhere who are facing inequity in education and discuss what we can do about it.”
