We aspire to support all Pacific Oaks students in all modalities during the writing process from beginning to end.

Mission

The Learning Center strives to assist in making the writing process more fundamental and adaptive. Through our work students will develop a confidence through writing which will enable them to succeed in all phases of academia.

The Learning Center

Active learning is priority at the Learning Center. We ask and require all students who seek services to join our learning environment by participating in the services rendered.

 Services Available

  • In-person and online tutoring sessions
    • Learn more about our online tutoring service.
    • Pasadena Campus Students: You have the option of receiving in-person and online tutoring service. Both types of service are from the Learning Center located in Pasadena, California. In-person tutoring takes place at the Pasadena campus in building 45 suite A105. Online appointments are conducted remotely by accessing a computer and a telephone.
    • San Jose Campus Students: You have the option of receiving online services from the Learning Center located in Pasadena, California. Online appointments are conducted remotely by accessing a computer and a telephone. For an in-person tutoring session you may speak with your Academic Advisor.
    • Northern California Cohort Students: You have the option of receiving online services from the Learning Center located in Pasadena, California. Online appointments are conducted remotely by accessing a computer and a telephone. For an in-person tutoring session you may speak with your Academic Advisor.
    • Southern California Cohort Students: You have the option of receiving in-person and online tutoring service. Both types of service are from the Learning Center located in Pasadena, California. In-person tutoring takes place at the Pasadena campus in building 45 suite A105. Online appointments are conducted remotely by accessing a computer and a telephone.

The Learning Center can help:

  • Brainstorm and organize your writing ideas
  • Identify writing strengths and weaknesses
  • Direct you to other supportive resources
  • Develop and organize content for written assignments
  • Focus and support thesis statements in essays
  • Recognize and overcome grammar problems
  • Time management strategies

The Learning Center cannot:

  • Write or type a paper for a student
  • Edit a paper or Master’s thesis for a student
  • Assure a student of obtaining a certain grade

Working with Tutors

  • To receive the best support possible during your tutoring session, we encourage you to bring the necessary materials and supplies to work with your tutor. For example, any drafts of your assignment, the assignment guidelines, course syllabus, books, notes and any questions.
  • Tutors can only work with a hard copy of your assignment for in-person tutorial sessions. Tutors will not work with virtual copies unless you have an online tutoring session.
  • Online tutoring sessions will be conducting using Microsoft Office 365 available through Pacific Oaks student email account.
  • Tutors are not permitted to assist students with mid-term, take-home, or final assessments without written and signed permission of the instructor, the instructor may also email [email protected]  with written permission.
  • Tutors may only assist students with their original work. Students are not allowed to pass off work of others as their own in any manner. Plagiarism is a serious academic violation of Pacific Oaks Academic Integrity policy found in the Academic Catalog & Student Handbook.

 

Graduate Thesis Students

The role of the Learning Center is to support graduate thesis writing students through limited assistance. Graduate students may visit the Learning Center three (3) times during the course of writing their thesis.

Smarthinking Online Tutoring Service

A live, online tutoring service available 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week

Scheduling Your In-person or Online Appointment

  1. Students may schedule an appointment 48 hours in advance of the target tutoring date.
  2. Due to high demand, students may schedule a maximum of one weekly appointment a week. A weekly appointment is a scheduled tutoring session that occurs at a specific day and time per week. Additional appointments are available upon request.
  3. Students can work with tutors for a total 60 minutes per tutorial session.
  4. Arriving more than 10 minutes late for your scheduled appointment, you forfeit your tutorial session and the session may be given to a walk-in student.
  5. Students who do not to attend three (3) scheduled appointments forfeit their ability to schedule future appointments for the current academic session (7 weeks).
  6. Cancellation of any appointment may occur within two hours of your scheduled tutoring session. Students who do not cancel on time and do not appear for a session will be counted as a “no-show.”

Graduate thesis students may schedule a total of three (3) appointments per academic session (7 weeks).
