B.A. Human Development: Early Childhood Education and Development Concentration


This on-campus program focuses on working with diversity in early childhood classrooms, as well as understanding the importance of social and cultural context to a child’s development.

B.A. Human Development: Early Childhood Education and Development Concentration

Tailored toward students who have taken foundational coursework in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or a related field, the B.A. completion program in Human Development: Early Childhood Education and Development Concentration is ideal for candidates who wish to work with children in a variety of education related fields.

Human Development students pursuing the on-ground course of study may also have the opportunity to enroll in online courses. The Credit for Learning from Experience option allows students to accelerate their progress toward a bachelor’s by receiving undergraduate credit for experience they have gained in the workplace.

The Earliest Years

This course will focus on the significance of earliest childhood, from birth to age three, in the human life cycle, with emphasis on trust and autonomy, sensory-motorexplorations,and the beginning of language and play. Students will examine the range of typical and atypical development in diverse cultural contexts in the preschool years. Observation of child behavior from the perspective of its meanings for the child will be included. Students will develop skill in designing culturally relevant and inclusive home and group care environments for optimum development of caring relationships and learning.

Working With Bicultural Children

This course focuses on the methodological issues as they relate to effectively working with bicultural children. Learning theory and motivational concepts based upon research with bicognitive children will be examined. Bicultural curriculum and bilingual program components will be discussed. Students will be required to participate in several on-site classroom observations in bicultural and bilingual settings. Particular emphasis will be placed on integrating the principles of bicultural development into the practical application of an effective Educational approach.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Pacific Oaks College
  • Associate’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or a traditional academic (non-vocational) area of study or successful completion of 48 units from a regionally accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 2.0. and meet the following course requirements:
    • Humanities and the Arts (9 units)
    • Science and Math (9 units)
    • Oral and Written Communication (9 units)
    • Minimum of 3 units in English Communications
    • Maximum of 3 units in Early Childhood Education Language Arts
    • Social Science (9 units)
    • Minimum of 3 units in Introductory Psychology
    • Minimum of 3 units in either Introductory Sociology or Cultural Anthropology
