Beating all odds

Alumna Sarah Crane is honored as Woman of the Year.

Each year since 1987, the California legislature has recognized women who have made an exceptional difference in their communities.

In a state of nearly 40 million people, Pacific Oaks College alumna Sarah Crane was one of only 120 women to receive the highly esteemed Woman of the Year honor this past spring for her role as a case manager and career adviser for Goodwill Southern California where she supports at-risk and homeless populations throughout San Bernardino communities.

“Through her partnerships at Goodwill, she has been able to help these individuals grow professionally,” Assembly Member Rodriguez of District 52 shared on his Facebook page. “We are proud to have you as this year’s ‘Woman of the Year’,” he added.

Crane’s commitment to helping marginalized and homeless populations also stems from pursuing her degree at Pacific Oaks while homeless.

Despite the odds against her, Sarah continued to push forward and obtained not only her B.A. in Human Development but also her M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy at Pacific Oaks. She credits Pacific Oaks with playing a vital role in her personal and educational development. She is also grateful to her Pacific Oaks professors and mentors who supported her throughout her journey.

“I have dedicated my award to all of the women who have been working on the front line throughout this pandemic,” Crane says. “I carry a part of Pacific Oaks with me.”

Crane’s achievements demonstrate the power of community, giving back, and the transformational journeys of fellow Pacific Oaks alumni and students.
