Joined by affiliate faculty, Dr. Nancy Bothne, Ph.D., from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Drs. Davis and Rojas will facilitate the seminar at Ekupholeni Mental Health and Trauma Centre, located just outside of Johannesburg. The training takes place March 27-31 and includes topics on historical and family violence, cultural identity development, family systems, and trauma-informed care.
Ekupholeni Mental Health and Trauma Centre is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that provides psychosocial counseling education to victims of trauma. Founded in 1994, Ekuopholeni was established in response to a community traumatized by the political violence of the 1980’s and 1990’s, as well as poverty, unemployment, criminal and gender violence, and substance abuse. The center strives to reach individuals and families in distress and to engage them in a holistic process of healing, recovery, and empowerment. Ekupholeni operates within the Katorus area, a semi-formal settlement of 2.5 million people located 25 kilometers outside of Johannesburg.
The trip to South Africa was made possible through funding from the The Community Solution Education System Office of Global Engagement and spearheaded by The Community Solution Education System International Liaison Officer, Kari Prince. Known as the Cross-Affiliate Faculty Internationalization Grant, the grant aims to promote international collaboration among The Community Solution Education System’ nonprofit system of colleges through faculty exchange, study abroad, academic partnerships and curricula internationalization, international students, and international community service.
